History

Hadrian's Gate

Triumphal arch built in 130 AD to honor Emperor Hadrian's visit to the city. Three marble arches still standing in near-perfect condition.

Insider tip

Visit early in the morning for pictures — tourist crowds thin out completely. Take your time to check the details, the street side of the gate is still original.

Perge Ancient City

Remarkably preserved Greco-Roman city 15km from Antalya. Colonnaded streets, baths, a stadium for 12,000, and a grand gate complex.

Insider tip

Rent a bike at the entrance — the site is 2km long and gets very hot.

Aspendos Theatre
History

Aspendos Theatre

Best-preserved Roman theatre in the world — still used for opera performances. Built in 155 AD with seating for 15,000.

Insider tip

Check if there's an Aspendos Opera Festival performance during your stay. Watching opera inside a 2,000-year-old theatre is surreal.

History

Hıdırlık Tower

A squat Roman watchtower perched on the southern tip of Kaleiçi, where the ancient city walls drop straight down to the sea. Built in the 2nd century CE — likely as a lighthouse and funerary monument — it sits inside Karaalioglu Park and looks out across an unbroken stretch of the Mediterranean. Unlike Hadrian's Gate, which sits on a busy road, Hıdırlık Tower feels genuinely removed from the city: you can sit on the walls around it, watch the ships pass, and forget the tourist trail exists.

Insider tip

This is one of the best sunset spots in the city — the light hits the tower from the west and the sea turns completely gold. Go 30 minutes before sunset and find a spot on the park wall to the left. Castle Cafe is a 2-minute walk if you want a drink with the view.

History

Kesik Minare — Broken Minaret

No building in Antalya carries as many layers of history as this one. It began as a Roman temple — possibly to the imperial cult — was converted into a Byzantine church in the 6th century, transformed into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest, and finally gutted by fire in the 19th century, leaving the broken minaret and skeletal walls standing alone in a quiet Kaleiçi courtyard. The name means 'cut minaret' in Turkish. Walking through the ruins feels genuinely different from the more manicured sites — it's raw and unscripted in a way that most ancient sites aren't.

Insider tip

Most visitors skip this in favour of Hadrian's Gate — which means it's usually empty, quiet, and free of tour groups. Give it 20 minutes. The way the light falls through the ruined walls in the afternoon is something most photographers in the city haven't discovered yet.

History

Karaalioglu Park

Antalya's most beautiful public park, draped along the top of the ancient Roman sea walls on the southern edge of Kaleiçi. Rose gardens, century-old cypress trees, and a stone promenade overlook the Mediterranean from a height of 50 metres — on clear days the coastline runs to Phaselis and beyond. It's the place locals come on weekend mornings with a glass of çay from the tea garden, to sit on the old walls and watch the ferries move in and out of the harbour below.

Insider tip

Come early on a weekday morning — the park is quiet, the light is soft, and the sea view is at its clearest before the heat haze builds. The Hıdırlık Tower is at the far southern end. Follow the wall path west from there for the best views of the coast.

Düden Waterfalls

The lower Düden falls directly into the Mediterranean — a dramatic coastal cascade you can walk behind. 10 minutes from city center.

Insider tip

Take the boat tour from the old harbour to see it from the sea — a completely different perspective.

Konyaaltı Beach

Antalya's answer to Miami Beach — locals genuinely call it that. A 7km stretch of silver-grey pebbles backed by the Taurus Mountains, with the full infrastructure of a resort city built around it: a wide cycling and running path, manicured green park areas, beach bars, restaurants, and sun lounger rentals the whole way along. Free to access, no booking required, open to everyone. The water is clear and deep blue, the mountains behind are snow-capped until May, and the sunset over the sea here is one of the best in the city.

Insider tip

Walk or rent a bike along the seafront path rather than driving — parking is a nightmare in summer. The western end near the aquarium is quieter and shadier. Go mid-week in July and August if you want space. The free showers and changing facilities are at regular intervals along the beach.

Lara Beach

Antalya's long sandy beach stretching east of the city, flanked by the mega-resort hotels that dominate this stretch of coast. The sand is fine and golden, the sea calm and shallow — everything a classic beach holiday demands. It's about 12km from the old city, so most visitors who end up here are staying at one of the all-inclusive hotels nearby.

Insider tip

Honest local take: unless you're specifically after a sandy beach, Konyaaltı is easier, closer, and better connected to the city. Lara is worth the trip if sand matters to you — it does have better swimming conditions for kids. Take the tram to Meydan then a taxi, or rent a scooter for the day.

Adalar Beach

A quieter stretch of coastline west of Konyaaltı, where the crowds thin out and the sea stays just as clear. Adalar attracts a more local crowd — families, fishermen, people who know the city well enough to skip the main beach drag. The rocky shoreline gives way to natural platforms perfect for swimming and sunbathing without the noise of a full beach operation.

Insider tip

Bring your own food and water — facilities here are minimal, which is exactly the point. Best reached by bike along the seafront path from Konyaaltı. The snorkelling around the rocks is surprisingly good — bring a mask.

Kurşunlu Waterfall & Nature Park

An easy half-day escape from the city — a national park 19km east of Antalya where a wide waterfall drops into a turquoise pool surrounded by old growth plane trees and Mediterranean scrub. It's calmer and less visited than the Düden falls, with a well-maintained path looping through the forest past smaller cascades, picnic areas, and viewpoints over the water. The park attracts local families at weekends; mid-week it's tranquil.

Insider tip

Best visited in spring (April–May) when the water is highest and the forest is greenest. There's a small entrance fee for the park. Pack a picnic — the shaded tables beside the waterfall are a genuinely nice place to eat. The dolmuş from Antalya city centre runs regularly in season.
