Free things to do in Kaleiçi

Antalya's old town is best on foot, and most of it costs nothing. Ten free things we'd show a friend.

  1. 1.Walk through Hadrian's Gate

The triple-arched marble gate was built in 130 AD for the visit of Emperor Hadrian, and it's still the grand way into the old town. It costs nothing to walk under 1,900 years of history.

💡 Look down under the middle arch for grooves in the stone worn by Roman cart wheels.

  2. 2.Join our free walking tour

Two hours through Kaleiçi with Hakan & Onur, who grew up here — Roman gates, Ottoman lanes and the stories behind them. It's tip-based: pay what you think it was worth at the end.

  4. 4.The Clock Tower square

The old Clock Tower stands at the busy edge of Kaleiçi where the old town meets the modern city — a natural meeting point and a good place to start exploring.

  5. 5.The Fluted Minaret (Yivli Minare)

The Seljuk minaret with its distinctive fluted shaft is the symbol of Antalya. The view up at it from the courtyard below is one of the best in the old town.

💡 Try to be here at the call to prayer — the square carries the sound beautifully.

  6. 6.Sultan Alaaddin Mosque, a former church

This mosque began life as a church, and traces of its past survive: look up at the main ceiling for Christian crosses and angel figures. In the garden stands the church's old bell tower.

💡 Visiting a mosque is free. Dress modestly and avoid prayer times.

  7. 7.The Broken Minaret (Kesik Minare)

A building that has been a Roman temple, a church and a mosque — its broken-off minaret gave it its name. A short stop that sums up Antalya's layered history.

  8. 8.Get lost in the lanes

Kaleiçi's real charm is its maze of cobbled lanes: wooden Ottoman houses, hidden courtyards, bougainvillea and old city walls around every corner. Put the phone away for an hour.

  9. 9.Stroll the old Roman harbour

Walk down to the harbour where the city was born. The cliffs, the city walls and the boats bobbing below make it the most photographed corner of Antalya.

  10. 10.Sunset at Hıdırlık Tower & Karaalioğlu Park

The round Roman tower on the cliff edge looks out over the bay to the Taurus Mountains. Next to it, Karaalioğlu Park is a shady, free place to sit as the sun goes down.

💡 This is the best free sunset in Antalya — arrive a little early for a good spot.
